Geniusweb Green Web Hosting Initiative

GeniusWeb has long been committed to reducing energy consumption by tuning servers that are less active to use less computing power during those quieter times but today we have moved into a whole new realm of energy savings. We have already begun reducing our carbon footprint by decommissioning a number of old servers and redeploying them onto newer and dramatically more power efficient machines.

Geniusweb will be encouraging all of its dedicated server customers to switch to a virtualization solution in which multiple dedicated servers will run on individual supercomputing cluster servers for a number of reasons.

First, this solution will result in far more efficient use of power hungry server systems by sharing the substantial computing power that is available on one of our servers among the virtual private servers. Most of our supercomputing cluster servers do not have to use even a fraction of their power in the service of hosting websites.

However since we consider high performance to be a cornerstone of our hosting service, we will be guaranteeing that no overselling of the system space will take place. Every virtualized server will have scheduled access to at least one cpu at any particular time and since our software systems are so efficient, access to idle time of other cpus is also possible making it virtually impossible to tell you are sharing hardware. The advent of SMP and multi-core CPUs makes this easy to achieve. A system will never starve for CPU cycles.

Secondly, the power savings of this technology will revolutionize the hosting industry and improve efficiencies so that in the face of ever increasing power costs rates can remain stable.

Finally, the virtualizing of systems means that we can quickly and easily copy entire running servers from one physical machine to another in a matter of minutes! So should imminent hardware failure, or a system overload, or any other problem occur we should be able to switch a running system to fresh hardware and spare customers the downtime they might otherwise have to suffer while we allocate new hardware in the event of a failure.

This technology is a necessary and morally sound option with very few drawbacks in this competitive environment, and it makes good sense for mother earth as well. Go green and help reduce your own power usage while enjoying supercomputing performance in your hosting solution. Contact GeniusWeb.com today to switch to environmentally sound hosting without sacrificing performance.
